This introduction gives an overview of the reasons that have led to the introduction of the term 'discourse' into semiotics and linguistics (section 1). This contribution, discusses the potential role that could be played by dynamic discourse semantics as developed within formal and functional linguistic approaches to connected discourse for revitalising general semiotic approaches to complex multimodal artefacts and performances. By adopting such dynamic semantics as an integral part of a new definition of semiotic modes, active semiosis is explicitly included within a fine-grained methodological framework of description and thereby made accessible for driving empirical analysis. The paper briefly explains the need for this development, relating the new account of semiotic modes to its Peircian and Saussurean forebears. Several areas of dynamic discourse semantics have already been developed within this general direction of research for treating the audiovisual medium of film. The paper introduces these areas and shows them at work with respect to a complex and multimodal example of modern film narration. The paper thus shows how methodological support can be provided for systematic semiotic engagement with the highly complex multimodal artefacts and performances commonplace today. Zusammenfassung. In formalen und funktionalen linguistischen Ansätzen für die Analyse von Diskurs und Text sind verschiedene dynamische Diskurssemantiken entwickelt worden. Der vorliegende Beitrag diskutiert die mögliche Rolle, die solche Ansätze für eine Revitalisierung von allgemeinen semiotischen Ansätzen zur Analyse von komplexen multimodalen Artefakten und Performances spielen könnten. Als integraler Bestandteil einer neuen Definition von semiotischer Modalität machen dynamische Diskurssemantiken die aktive Semiose für empirische Analysen von komplexen Artefakten und Performances zugänglich. Der Artikel erklärt die Notwendigkeit einer solchen Weiterentwicklung, setzt die neue Darstellungsweise von semiotischen Modalitäten in Bezug zu ihren Peirce'schen und Saussure'schen Vorgängern und demonstriert ihre Anwendung in der Analyse des audiovisuellen Mediums Film. Damit wird gezeigt, wie eine methodische Unterstützung für semiotisch genaue und empirisch tragfähige Untersuchungen von hochkomplexen multimodalen Artefakten und Performances, wie sie heute weit verbreitet sind, bereitgestellt werden kann.
