Es ist eine Einladung an die Menschen, sich anzuschließen, gemeinsam die Stimme zu erheben und ihre physische Präsenz zu zeigen. "Le Savali: Berlin" ist Theater als Zeremonie und Ritual, das die Gemeinschaften mit ihren Erfahrungen dieser Stadt konfrontiert. Es ist die öffentliche Deklaration, dass Würde und menschliches Handeln nicht durch Intoleranz und unsichtbare Regeln eingeschränkt werden. 'Le Savali' is the Samoan concept meaning to march, usually implying a long journey taking days or weeks to express or to relay a message or a show of strength and unity. It is a call on the people to join and become a joint voice. It is a call to bring their physical presence. "Le Savali: Berlin" is the construction of a ground or a platform for the activation of theatre/ritual/ceremony in a calling on the community to confront current realities experienced through the city of Berlin. It is a public declaration that the integrity and dignity of our common humanity should not be deformed by fears or anonymous systems,or intolerance, such as we witness all around us. A unique encounter of artists and communities shaping the face of Berlin. "Le Savali: Berlin" concerns the city as site of the between of life and death, or the city as site of transformation, mutability, unstable thresholds of identity, populations or governance. "Le Savali: Berlin" opens the past and future of the city, the city as partition between spaces for living and memorials or tombs of the dead. It is an occasion for drawing out and drawing over contemporary political, social and cultural conditions of the empire and the city.

MAU bedeutet Deklaration, Aufrichtigkeit und Revolution, eine Affirmation zur Veränderung. Ponifasio trägt als ein High Chief of Samoa den Titel Sala und zählt zu den geistigen, spirituellen und führenden Persönlichkeiten Samoas. Seine gleichermaßen radikal zeitgenössische und zeremonielle Theaterarbeit transzendiert konventionelle Vorstellungen von Theater, Tanz, Ritual und gesellschaftlichem Engagement, ohne Anbiederung an die westliche Ästhetik oder an südpazifische Klischees. Theatre artist Lemi Ponifasio established MAU in 1995 as the name for his work and a platform for critical reflection and creativity with artists, scholars, activists, intellectuals and community leaders. MAU means a declaration to the truth of a matter or revolution, as an effort to transform.As a High Chief of Samoa, Ponifasio bears the title Sala and is among the intellectual, spiritual and leading personalities of Samoa. His radical and ceremonial visual stagings intersect and transcend conventional ideas of theatre and dance, and civic activism. Without ingratiating to Western aesthetics or South Pacific clichés, his works appropriate states of awareness; hauntingly beautiful and unrelentingly disturbing, they address our past, present and future.Globally, Lemi Ponifasio's epic productions such as Tempest, Birds With Skymirrors, Requiem and Paradise provoke controversy and attention. Tempest, which features the Maori activist Tame Iti, is a series of works responding to the escalation of state powers and unlawful detention in the post 9/11 world and Birds With Skymirrors is an urgent address to human / earth relations in time of climate change. Le Savali: Berlin questions power and life in cities of empire.Ponifasio presents his work at major festivals and theatres throughout the world including Theatre de la Ville Paris, Holland Festival, Southbank Centre London, Vienna Festival, the Lincoln Center New York, and Edinburgh International Festival amongst others. MAU was presented in Germany for the first time in Stuttgart 2005 at Theater der Welt, 2010 at Theater der Welt in Essen, at spielzeit'europa Berliner Festspiele and Tanz im August in Berlin. 2011 Le Savali: Berlin was commissioned by spielzeit'europa,for the 2011 season of theatre and dance at the Berliner Festspiele.
