Diese kleine lyrische und schwelgerische Preziose ist eine von Tschaikowsky selbst geschaffene Bearbeitung nach dem berühmten II. Satz seines 1. Streichquartetts D-Dur op. 11. Die Bearbeitung ist vermutlich 1888 für den befreundeten russischen Cellisten Anatolij Brandukov in Paris entstanden. Die Ausgabe folgt der Edition in dem von Viktor L. Kubackij (1891-1970), einem Schüler Brandukovs, herausgegebenen Band der alten Tschaikowsky-Gesamtausgabe.

The two little lyrical and sumptuous gems are arrangements by Tchaikovsky of his own compositions: the Andante cantabile in B major based on the famous 2nd movement of his String Quartet No. 1 in D major Op. 11 and the Nocturne in D minor based on the piano piece of the same name in C sharp minor, No. 4 of Six Pieces Op. 19. Both arrangements were probably written in Paris in 1888 for his friend, the Russian cellist Anatoly Brandukov. The current edition is based on the edition from the volume of the old Tchaikovsky Complete Edition published by Victor L. Kubacky (1891-1970), a pupil of Brandukov.
